iOS 26: What to Expect — Compatibility, Features & Release Window
Apple’s iPhone 17 event is set for Tuesday, September 9, and if history repeats itself, iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 could arrive about one week later — around Tuesday, September 16. The new OS versions bring significant upgrades across iPhone and iPad, including a refreshed UI, improved Phone app, live translation via AirPods, and collaborative features in Messages.
Key Features
- Liquid Glass design: A polished new look for app icons, floating buttons, dark-mode refinements, and a cohesive design across Apple’s platforms.
- Phone app redesign: Scroll contacts, recent calls and voicemails on one screen, plus Hold Assist to notify you when an agent answers.
- Live Translate: Real-time translation for calls and messages, with possible AirPods integration.
- Polls in Messages: Create polls in group chats to simplify decisions.
Compatibility — These iPhones Won’t Make the Cut
Unlike last year, Apple is dropping support for several 2018 models. The iPhones that won’t be compatible with iOS 26 are:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
Supported iPhones
Per Apple, iPhones announced in 2019 or later should be compatible with iOS 26, including:
- iPhone SE (2nd gen and later)
- iPhone 11 / 11 Pro / 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 / 12 mini / 12 Pro / 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13 / 13 mini / 13 Pro / 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14 / 14 Plus / 14 Pro / 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15 / 15 Plus / 15 Pro / 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16 / 16 Plus / 16 Pro / 16 Pro Max / 16e
Supported iPads
The following iPads and newer will support iPadOS 26:
- iPad Pro (M4)
- iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd gen and later)
- iPad Pro 11-inch (1st gen and later)
- iPad Air (3rd gen and later)
- iPad (8th gen and later)
- iPad mini (5th gen and later)
What If You Don’t Upgrade?
Older devices that can’t run iOS 26 will miss security updates and new features; some apps may stop working. You can continue using your device, but weigh the security and compatibility trade-offs.
When Will iOS 26 Be Available?
Expect iOS 26 in mid-September, possibly on or around Sept. 16, with official confirmation at Apple’s Sept. 9 event.
