xAI sues Apple and OpenAI over alleged App Store anticompetitive behavior

Elon Musk’s xAI has filed a lawsuit in the Northern District of Texas (Fort Worth Division) accusing Apple and OpenAI of conspiring to block competing AI products from getting fair exposure on the App Store. The complaint alleges Apple’s exclusive integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been used to “lock up markets to maintain their monopolies and prevent innovators like X and xAI from competing.”

xAI claims that, absent Apple’s deal with OpenAI, Apple would have promoted the X app and xAI’s Grok more prominently. The company is seeking damages and alleging anticompetitive conduct.

Apple has not publicly responded to the lawsuit. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously called Musk’s related allegation “a remarkable claim,” referencing past allegations that Musk manipulated X’s algorithms to favor his own posts and those of certain commentators. OpenAI spokesperson Kayla Wood told The Verge the suit is “consistent with Mr. Musk’s ongoing pattern of harassment.”

Observers note xAI filed in the Fort Worth division — a court Musk has used repeatedly — a practice sometimes called “judge shopping.”

Reporting and further coverage:

Note: Multiple outlets report the complaint was filed on August 25, 2025. We will update this post as Apple or OpenAI release official statements or as courts respond.
