YouTube tightens Terms to target cheaper foreign Premium subscriptions
Starting Sept 26, 2025, YouTube will enforce revised Terms of Service for YouTube Premium (including YouTube Music Premium and Premium Lite) that require subscription access to be used predominantly in the country where the user originally signed up. The update strengthens geo-location and subscription-use rules and creates the basis for YouTube to cancel or restrict subscriptions that appear to have been registered abroad to get lower rates.
What changed
- Updated Terms clarify plan types, payment and promotional rules, and geographic usage expectations.
- Subscriptions must be primarily used from the sign-up country.
- Continuing to use the service after Sept 26, 2025 implies acceptance of the new Terms.
What this means for users
- If you bought Premium abroad to save money, YouTube’s new Terms make those subscriptions at risk of cancellation or restriction.
- If you disagree with the changes, cancel before Sept 26, 2025.
- Check your account’s region settings and payment method to avoid surprises.
