FlyQuest suspends Bwipo after sexist comments about menstruation
FlyQuest has suspended top-laner Gabriël “Bwipo” Rau after comments he made on a Twitch stream suggesting women shouldn’t play competitively while menstruating. The remarks circulated on social platforms and prompted swift responses from peers and the organization.
What happened
During a livestream, Bwipo said there are times in a woman’s monthly cycle when she “should not be f—ing playing competitive games,” claiming his view came from personal experience. The clip spread on Reddit and TikTok before it was removed.
“I thought we’re past that… That’s such a crazy take,” — Eefje “sjokz” Depoorter, reacting to Bwipo’s comments.
FlyQuest response
FlyQuest called the comments “sexist” and “antithetical” to the organization’s core values. The team suspended Bwipo for the next series in the LTA playoffs and said it will donate his prize money from the event to causes that support women in gaming. FlyQuest highlighted that comments discouraging even one young woman from pursuing a pro career harm the future of esports.
Bwipo’s apology
“I know I fucked up. My comments were ignorant and disrespectful to women, including those close to me. I’m sorry to those I hurt… I’ll be taking steps to reflect, listen, and do better.” — Bwipo
Context & reactions
The incident sparked debate in the community about accountability for players’ off-stream speech, gender bias in esports, and how organizations should respond. Several esports outlets covered the story.
