OpenAI Instant Checkout in ChatGPT — Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)

OpenAI Launches Instant Checkout in ChatGPT (Powered by Stripe & the Agentic Commerce Protocol)

OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout, a feature that lets users buy certain products directly within a ChatGPT conversation. The feature is powered by Stripe and the newly announced Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which aims to standardize commerce interactions between AI agents, buyers, and merchants.

Key Details

  • Availability: Currently available to users in the United States.
  • Supported merchants: Initially supports single-item purchases from Etsy sellers in the US. OpenAI says over a million Shopify merchants (including brands like Glossier, SKIMS and Spanx) will support Instant Checkout “soon.”
  • Limitations: Single-item checkout only for now; multi-item cart checkout and broader regional availability are planned.
  • Payments & Orders: Orders and payments are processed by the merchant. ChatGPT can use your card on file with OpenAI or other available payment options. Stripe provides a secure payment flow via a Shared Payment Token (SPT) scoped to the merchant and cart total.
  • Fees: OpenAI states merchants will pay a small fee on completed purchases; Instant Checkout should not affect product prices for buyers.
  • Ranking & Neutrality: Product search results in ChatGPT will continue to be ranked by relevance (availability, price, quality). OpenAI says it will not boost items that support Instant Checkout over others.
  • Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP): ACP is presented as an open standard designed to enable “agentic commerce” — allowing AI agents to assist with discovery and purchases. OpenAI plans to open source ACP to enable broader merchant integration.

Why this matters

Instant Checkout collapses discovery-to-purchase into a single conversational flow, letting users go from asking for product recommendations to completing a purchase without leaving ChatGPT. This could change how people discover and buy products online.
