Snap OS update brings improved browser, Spotlight in AR to Spectacles
Snap released an update to Snap OS that refines the software powering its AR Spectacles. The update adds a redesigned web browser, a dedicated Spotlight lens for browsing Snapchat’s short-form videos in AR, a gallery lens for previewing photos taken with the glasses, and battery-optimized video playback (~40 minutes continuous playback).
Key changes
- Redesigned browser: easier site switching, resizable windows, faster and more power efficient.
- Spotlight lens: browse Snapchat Spotlight videos directly in AR.
- Gallery lens: preview and scroll through photos with hand gestures.
- Improved video playback: around 40 minutes continuous video (device battery similar).
Context
The update follows the Spectacles showcase at Snap Partner Summit (SPS) 2024 and comes as Snap prepares a consumer-grade pair of glasses (“Specs”) expected in 2026. Until now, Spectacles have been distributed to developers under a subscription model; the new OS features aim to make the AR experience more practical and phone-replacing over time.
