Warntag 2025 — Nationwide test at 11:00 (What to expect)

Warntag 2025 — Nationwide test at 11:00

Today (second Thursday in September) at 11:00 CET Germany will carry out the annual Bundesweiter Warntag — a nationwide test of emergency warning systems coordinated by the Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK).

What to expect

  • Smartphone alerts via Cell Broadcast (your phone may make a loud tone and display a message).
  • Warnings via warning apps (e.g. NINA, KATWARN), TV, radio and sometimes public displays.
  • Local sirens may sound with a one-minute wailing tone at 11:00; many areas send an “all clear” later (often around 11:45) through most channels.

Why this test?

The exercise checks reach and functionality of the systems used to warn the population in emergencies so authorities can improve procedures and technology.

What you should do

  • Don’t be alarmed — it’s a test. Use it to check your device volume and notification settings.
  • If you care for others (children, elderly), let them know this is a test.
  • Report any issues with alerts to local authorities or via the official BBK guidance.
