WhatsApp Rolls Out On-Device Message Translations (iOS & Android)
WhatsApp has started rolling out a built-in message translation feature on iOS and Android. The update lets you translate messages directly inside a chat — simply long-press a message, tap Translate, then choose the language you want to translate the message to or from. On Android, there
lso
ppears to be a per-chat toggle for automatic translation, which can translate all incoming messages in that chat.
Supported languages
Android (initial): English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Arabic.
iPhone: Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese (matches Apple’s Translate app languages).
How to translate a message
- Long-press the message you want to translate.
- Tap Translate.
- Choose the source and target languages if needed.
Privacy & on-device processing
Translations are processed on your device using downloadable language packs. WhatsApp says this preserves end-to-end encryption and helps keep your messages private.
Where it works
The feature works in one-on-one chats, groups and Channel updates. WhatsApp hasn
ny confirmed timeline for support on WhatsApp Web or the Windows app.
