Animal Crossing: New Horizons — Switch 2 edition lands Jan 15 (free Switch update for original Switch)

Animal Crossing game on TV and console

Nintendo will release a Switch 2 edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons on January 15, bringing upgraded visuals and new social features — and a free update for the original Switch version arrives the same day. The Switch 2 build adds higher fidelity graphics and several features that take advantage of the new hardware.

The Switch 2 edition focuses on improved presentation and social play: 4K support in TV mode, mouse controls via Joy‑Con 2 to make decorating and design easier, and support for the Switch 2 camera so players can see each other’s faces above characters while playing. Online multiplayer expands to up to 12 players on Switch 2 (up from eight).

What’s new in the Switch 2 edition

  • 4K TV support: sharper visuals in TV mode for a more detailed island experience.
  • Mouse/controls: mouse input via Joy‑Con 2 to simplify editing, custom designs and messaging.
  • Social features: up to 12 players online and camera overlays that show faces above avatars.
  • Physical & upgrade options: the Switch 2 version will be sold physically and Nintendo will offer an upgrade pack for owners of the original game.

Free update for the original Switch

Players who stick with the original Switch won’t be left out — a free update on January 15 adds a hotel on the pier where you can design themed rooms and collect souvenirs, a dream world with up to three additional islands for creative play, new craftable items, and expanded home storage up to 9,000 items (up from 5,000).

The update also includes a variety of crossovers and collectible additions: Nintendo consoles as decorative items (playable if you have a Switch Online subscription), Lego items, and special Legend of Zelda and Splatoon collaborations that tie into select Amiibo functionality.

Why it matters

These updates refresh a beloved title and give both new and returning players reasons to revisit their islands. The Switch 2 edition leans into higher‑end hardware advantages while the free Switch update keeps the install base engaged with substantial new content and QoL improvements.

Discussion: Will you upgrade to the Switch 2 edition, take the free update on your current Switch, or start a new island in January? What new feature are you most excited to try?
