OpenAI & AMD: 6 GW of Instinct GPUs — First MI450 Deployment H2 2026

OpenAI has agreed to purchase AMD Instinct GPUs to build six gigawatts of AI infrastructure, with the first 1 GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs slated for deployment in the second half of 2026. AMD expects the deal to generate “tens of billions of dollars” in revenue. The agreement also includes an option for OpenAI to buy 160 million AMD shares at $0.01 each, potentially giving OpenAI up to a 10% stake as shares vest against deployment milestones.

Quote: “AMD’s leadership in high-performance chips will enable us to accelerate progress and bring the benefits of advanced AI to everyone faster,” said Sam Altman, OpenAI CEO.

Why this matters

  • Scale: 6 GW is a major commitment to AMD’s data-center GPUs and adds competition to NVIDIA-centered deployments.
  • Financials: AMD forecasts substantial revenue; OpenAI secures long-term compute capacity and equity upside.
  • Market context: OpenAI also has a large agreement with NVIDIA for at least 10 GW backed by a multibillion-dollar investment plan, and works closely with Microsoft. NVIDIA has separately invested in Intel to integrate CPU and accelerated compute offerings.

Availability of AMD Instinct MI450

AMD Instinct GPUs such as the MI450 are data-center, high-performance computing products sold through enterprise channels and cloud/data-center vendors. They are not consumer GPUs and are generally not available on retail sites like Amazon.
