Pinterest adds “dial down” controls to reduce AI-generated images
Pinterest has rolled out new settings that let users reduce the amount of AI-generated imagery in their recommendations. The company is targeting categories that have been “highly-prone” to AI content, aiming to help people find more human-made pins in feeds that have been flooded with synthetic images.
Users can now use a new “Refine your recommendations” control to toggle generative AI content for specific categories. Current categories included in the initial rollout are:
- Art
- Architecture
- Beauty
- Fashion
- Entertainment
- Health
- Home decor
- Sport
Pinterest emphasizes this feature will “dial down” AI-based content rather than remove it entirely, noting that not all AI-generated posts are low quality and some users welcome them. The setting currently applies only to image pins (not video), and the company says it has also ramped up labeling for AI-created or AI-edited content to make it more visible.
The controls are available now on desktop and Android, with an iOS rollout expected in the coming weeks. For more details, see the original report on Engadget.
What this means:
- More control over your feed: Users can limit AI image content by category.
- Image-only scope: The toggle affects image pins; AI video clips may still appear.
- Labeling and detection: Pinterest says it is improving labels for AI-created/edited posts.
As platforms wrestle with the rise of generative AI, Pinterest’s approach gives users more agency while acknowledging that some AI content is acceptable. It’s a pragmatic step toward cleaner, more relevant discovery for those who prefer human-made visuals.
