Spotify launches managed accounts for kids

Spotify Launches “Managed Accounts” for Kids on Premium Family

Spotify has rolled out a new “managed accounts” feature for younger listeners, now available in seven additional markets including the United States. The feature—initially piloted last year—lets parents and guardians on a Spotify Premium Family plan create dedicated profiles for children with tailored recommendations and parental controls.

Key capabilities of a managed account include:

  • Personalized recommendations and standard Premium features like Discover Weekly and Daylist.
  • Parental filters to block explicit content, limit playback of specific artists, and disable video playback features (including Canvas) if desired.
  • Restrictions on interactivity features (for example, Messages are disabled for these profiles).
  • Crucially, plays on a managed account won’t affect the plan owner’s Taste Profile, Discover Weekly, or Wrapped results—helpful if kids keep looping viral tracks.

The managed account sits between the very kid-focused Spotify Kids app and a regular unrestricted Premium profile: it offers a more grown-up listening experience for older kids while keeping parents in control. Standard Family plan requirements apply—managed accounts must be created by the Family plan owner (via Account settings > Add a Member > Add a listener aged under 13) and the plan is currently priced at about $20/month in the U.S.

The rollout expands access to families who want a middle ground between the limited Spotify Kids app and full, unrestricted accounts. If your kids are already discovering bands in the car or obsessing over viral tracks, a managed account can give them freedom while keeping your music history intact.

How to set one up:

  • Open the Spotify app and go to Account settings.
  • Select “Add a Member,” then choose “Add a listener aged under 13.”
  • Follow the in-app prompts to configure content restrictions and create the profile (Family plan required).
