Threads tests “Communities” to deepen topic-based conversations

Meta is testing a new “Communities” feature on Threads to create dedicated spaces for people to chat about specific topics and interests. The feature builds on custom feeds and topic tags to offer “casual spaces” for focused conversations — Meta has already created 100+ communities around popular topics like “NBA Threads,” “Book Threads” and “Tech Threads.”

Key features and differences from existing topic feeds:

  • Dedicated community feeds that can be joined and followed.
  • Ranked posts in community feeds to surface more relevant content (vs. the current topic feeds that show a random mix of tagged posts).
  • Custom emojis for likes inside communities (e.g., a basketball emoji for an NBA community).
  • Badges for leading voices in communities to highlight active contributors.
  • Community membership will influence your main Threads feed, helping tune recommendations as you join more groups.

Why it matters: Communities could help Threads feel more cohesive by creating interest-driven pockets of conversation, addressing complaints that the app’s algorithm surfaces too many random recommended posts. The idea follows similar moves by other platforms (Twitter/X launched communities in 2021) and aims to boost engagement and retention.

What we know now: Several users have reported seeing the feature and joining communities in recent days. Meta says it’s testing the feature and gradually rolling it out to users.
