Meta smart glasses get ‘Quick Connect’ — one-touch calls and texts without “Hey Meta”

Meta smart glasses add Quick Connect: one-touch calls, texts and media without saying “Hey Meta”

Meta is rolling out a software update (19.2) for its smart glasses that reduces dependence on voice commands. The new Quick Connect feature lets users assign a favorite contact and app, then press-and-hold the right touchpad to call, text or instantly share photos and videos — without saying “Hey Meta.”

Quick Connect supports multiple messaging paths, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and native phone calls or SMS. The shortcut can also send media you just captured on the glasses directly through your chosen app, making quick sharing more discreet in public settings.

How it works (quick)

  • Assign a contact: Pick a contact and choose which app to use for communication.
  • One-touch shortcut: Press-and-hold the right-side touchpad to call, message or send media.
  • Apps supported: WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and the device’s native calling/messaging app.
  • Availability: Included in the 19.2 software update rolling out now.

Why this matters

The feature makes interactions with smart glasses less conspicuous and more practical, addressing the awkwardness of repeatedly using a wake phrase in public. It’s similar in intent to the action button on Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses, though Quick Connect focuses on communication shortcuts rather than broader device control.

What to watch

  • Privacy & consent: Auto-sharing shortcuts make it easier to send photos quickly — users should verify recipients and chosen apps to avoid accidental shares.
  • Third-party wake words: Meta previewed tools at its Connect event that may let developers set custom wake words for their apps — a potential future path to reduce the need for a global “Hey Meta.”
  • Adoption & usability: Whether Quick Connect will meaningfully reduce voice use or if users will still rely on voice commands for complex tasks.

Overall, Quick Connect is a small but useful step toward more discreet, practical wearable interactions. It won’t eliminate voice controls entirely, but it gives users an easy option for routine communications.

Discussion: Will Quick Connect make you use smart glasses more in public — or is a physical shortcut not enough to change how comfortable you feel using wearables? Which shortcut would you want next?
