Trump launches National Design Studio; Joe Gebbia named Chief Design Officer

President Trump has signed an executive order creating a temporary “National Design Studio” charged with improving the usability and aesthetics of federal websites and digital services. Airbnb co‑founder Joe Gebbia is reported to be named the studio’s Chief Design Officer.

What the studio will do

  • Standardize design and user experience across federal websites to reduce duplication and costs.
  • Advise agencies on modernizing interfaces for services such as tax filing and benefits applications.
  • Focus on usability, accessibility, and consistent visual frameworks.

Structure and timeline

The studio is set to operate for three years under the executive order. While Gebbia will serve as Chief Design Officer, an administrator will run day‑to‑day operations and report to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.

Relationship to DOGE

The initiative is linked to the administration’s broader efficiency efforts, including the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). DOGE — previously associated with aggressive cost‑cutting and IT modernization efforts — has slowed since leadership changes, and it remains unclear how DOGE and the new studio will operate together.
