WhatsApp launches AI „Writing Help“ assistant

WhatsApp has introduced a new AI-powered „Writing Help“ assistant to help users draft and refine messages directly within the app. The assistant offers multiple tone options — Rephrase, Professional, Funny, Supportive and Proofread — and generates suggestions that users can further edit before sending.

How to access

Look for a new pencil icon in one-to-one chats or group conversations. Tap it, type your draft or prompt, and the assistant will propose alternative phrasings. You can accept, modify, or ignore the suggestions.

Rollout and languages

The feature is rolling out now in English and initially available to users in the US. Meta says it plans to expand to more countries and languages later in the year.

Privacy and processing

WhatsApp messages remain end-to-end encrypted. For AI processing, Meta uses its Private Processing technology to ensure message content and suggested re-writes aren’t accessible to Meta or others. This approach is similar to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute and is designed to keep personal messages private while allowing AI-powered features.

Is it useful?

Many platforms now include AI writing assistants, so WhatsApp’s feature follows a familiar trend. It may be most helpful for composing longer or more formal messages; its benefit for short back-and-forth chats is less clear, though some users may appreciate quick tone adjustments.
