Kobo eReaders Replace Pocket with Instapaper — What You Need to Know
Rakuten has replaced the Pocket read-it-later integration on Kobo eReaders with Instapaper. The new integration is available globally via a firmware update and brings most of the same capabilities Pocket offered: access to saved articles, offline downloads, and basic library management (like, delete, archive).
Key points
- What changed: Instapaper replaces Pocket as the native read-it-later service on all supported Kobo eReaders.
- Availability: Global rollout via firmware update; supported on the full Kobo lineup, including devices such as the Kobo Libra Colour and Kobo Elipsa 2E.
- Features: Link your Instapaper account on the device to access your saved articles, download articles for offline reading, and like, delete, or archive items.
- Migration: Former Pocket users can import saved articles into Instapaper via the Instapaper import tools.
- Missing features: At launch, handwritten/stylus annotations on devices like the Kobo Libra Colour or Kobo Elipsa 2E are not supported by the Instapaper integration.
How to set it up
- Sync your Kobo to receive the firmware update that adds Instapaper.
- Open the read-it-later option on your Kobo and follow the prompts to display a device code.
- Visit the Instapaper activation page (or kobo.com/instapaper if prompted) and enter the code to link your account.

Notes
Mozilla shut down the Pocket integration on Kobo after winding down Pocket on that platform; Instapaper offers a close replacement though image handling and formatting differences remain. If you previously used Pocket on Kobo, the Instapaper integration is a strong alternative to keep your read-it-later workflow on-device.
