iOS 26: Release, Compatibility & Key Features
Apple released iOS 26 on September 15, 2025. The update brings a major visual redesign called “Liquid Glass,” new features like Live Translate, polls in Messages, a revamped Phone and Camera app, screenshot search with AI help, and many lock-screen and productivity improvements.
Is your iPhone compatible?
Short answer: If your iPhone was announced in 2019 or later, it will likely support iOS 26. Important note: three 2018 models are not supported — iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max.
For the official compatibility list and device-by-device details, see Apple’s support page: Apple — iPhone models compatible with iOS 26.
Why you might wait (or not)
- If you want smaller, security-only fixes, Apple also offers iOS 18.7 as a conservative option.
- Upgrading gives you the new UI and features, but older devices left off the list will miss future security updates and may lose app compatibility over time.
Key features to try first
- Liquid Glass design: New app icons, floating buttons, dark mode refinements, and a cohesive visual update across Apple platforms.
- Phone app redesign: Scroll contacts, recents and voicemail on one screen + Hold Assist to avoid on-hold music.
- Live Translate: Real-time translation for calls and messages.
- Polls in Messages: Create quick polls in group chats to simplify decisions.
- Lock screen updates: new clock styles, 3D wallpaper effects, more widgets and Focus refinements.
- Camera & Algos: Simplified UI, lens-dirty detection.
- Screenshots: Search images (Google) or ask ChatGPT directly from the screenshot editor.
