Proton Mail’s Redesigned Mobile Apps: Faster, Private, Offline

Proton has rolled out rebuilt iOS and Android apps for Proton Mail, redesigned from the ground up to deliver a “cleaner, faster and more private” experience. The update started rolling out in the App Store and Google Play Store in 2025.

Key improvements

  • Performance: Scrolling, archiving and replying are ~2× faster.
  • Offline mode: Read, compose and organize messages without an internet connection.
  • Redesigned UI: Simpler navigation and easier-to-reach controls (e.g., composer button).
  • Shared codebase: iOS and Android apps now share roughly 80% of their code, enabling faster, near-simultaneous updates.

Why this matters

Proton says rebuilding the apps without the constraints of data-driven monetization allowed them to focus on privacy and performance. Product lead Anant Vijay Singh credited community feedback and Proton’s business model for enabling the redesign.

“The new Proton Mail mobile apps reflect this feedback and show what is possible if you build an email app without the constraints imposed by trying to monetize user data, allowing for a cleaner, faster, and more private experience.” — Anant Vijay Singh, Product Lead

What’s next

Proton is also working on a refreshed Proton Calendar and has launched Lumo, an AI assistant the company positions as a more ethical alternative.
