New York Times shutters NYT Audio app — audio moves into main app
The New York Times will shut down its standalone NYT Audio app on October 3, 2025. Podcasts, narrated articles and other audio offerings will be integrated directly into the publisher’s main NYT app under a new “Listen” tab.
What happened
Launched in 2023, the NYT Audio app aimed to be a single hub for the publisher’s audio output and selected external audio content. The company now says it will consolidate audio and video features into the flagship news app to streamline discovery and personalization.
Why it matters
- Simpler user experience: audio will be available in the primary app rather than a separate download.
- Better personalization: consolidation may allow NYT to surface audio content alongside other formats more effectively.
- Impact on listeners: users who preferred the standalone app will need to switch to the main NYT app by Oct 3.
