Hands-on: Amazon’s all-new Kindle Scribe lineup (2025)

Amazon refreshed its Kindle Scribe line with three configurations: an entry model without a front light, a version with LED front lights (often called the Kindle Scribe 3), and the new Kindle Scribe Colorsoft — Amazon’s first writing tablet with a color display.

Key specs

  • Display: 11-inch glare-free screen (thinner bezels); Colorsoft uses a color filter + LEDs
  • Thickness: ~5.4 mm; Weight: ~400 g (0.88 lb)
  • Latency: ~<12 ms on monochrome models, 14 ms on Colorsoft (reported)
  • New custom chip + oxide display tech → ~40% faster page turns & improved writing responsiveness
  • Improved magnets for stylus retention and a slightly redesigned, more ergonomic stylus
  • Updated software: redesigned home page, AI-powered search that indexes handwritten notes, Workspace (new foldering), Google Drive/OneDrive support, OneNote export, and a “Send to Alexa+” feature arriving next year

Models & Pricing

  • Kindle Scribe (no front light) — $429
  • Kindle Scribe (with front light) — $499
  • Kindle Scribe Colorsoft — $629

Impressions

The demo units felt notably thin and light, with a symmetrical, near‑bezelless design. Removing layers from the display helped reduce parallax and improve pen feel; front‑lit models use miniaturized LEDs with double bulbs for even lighting. The Colorsoft showed surprisingly vivid, distinct hues compared with other e‑ink color devices.

Magnets holding the stylus are stronger, addressing a common gripe from earlier models. The new stylus is slightly thicker and more ergonomic, retaining a rubberized eraser top and a programmable action button.

Software & Workflow

Updated home screen includes a top search bar (AI‑powered), a quick notes area, and a “Jump back into” section. AI search can index handwritten notes and summarize/search across notebooks. Workspace replaces the Notebooks tab to make grouping documents easier. Cloud integrations with Google Drive and OneDrive simplify file transfer; OneNote export is coming.
