Best webcams for 2025 — buying guide and picks
A good webcam makes a big difference for work calls, streaming or catching up with friends. Built-in laptop cameras often fall short; an external webcam gives you sharper video, better colors and features like background control and low-light correction.

Why upgrade?
External webcams typically offer higher resolutions, better color reproduction, improved low-light performance and features like autofocus, auto-framing and stronger microphones.
Factors to consider
Resolution & frame rate
1080p is the sweet spot for most people; look for 1080p at 30 or 60fps. 4K exists but is overkill for most conferencing and streaming use.
Field of view (FOV)
FOV determines how much fits in the frame. Typical webcams are ~78°; cheaper ones can be ~60°. Wider or adjustable FOVs are useful if you want more background or to include multiple people.
Autofocus & auto features
Autofocus keeps you sharp as you move. Higher-end webcams may include auto-framing (keeps you centered) and auto light correction for dim rooms.
Microphones
Built-in mics are fine for casual calls; look for stereo and noise reduction if you rely on the webcam for audio. Otherwise, consider a dedicated mic.
Design & privacy
Most webcams clip to your monitor; some include built-in lights or lens covers for privacy.
Price
Expect to pay $60–$150 for a worthwhile upgrade. Spending $150+ can get pro features like 4K, stereo mics and advanced settings.
How we test
We use each webcam as our primary camera for at least a week, testing in different lighting conditions and using built-in mics on calls. We also try any companion software and special modes.
FAQ
Should I get a 4K or 1080p webcam? For most users, 1080p is enough. Choose 4K only if you need extra detail for recordings, cropping or professional streaming and your platform supports it.
