Snap adds in-lens shopping and new AR features ahead of Specs launch

Snap used its Lens Fest event to preview features for its first consumer-ready AR glasses, called “Specs,” due next year. The headline: Snap will enable direct purchases inside AR lenses through a new set of developer tools named Commerce Kit. That could let users buy digital goods or unlock premium features without leaving the AR experience.

Commerce Kit will allow “select developers to accept payments directly inside lenses,” enabling a new monetization path for Snap’s AR ecosystem. Snap has already rewarded lens creators through its Lens Creator program; in-lens commerce aims to expand that into ongoing revenue for creators and developers.

Beyond payments, Snap previewed several capabilities expected to ship on Specs, including a standalone Spotlight experience, a more powerful web browser, and a real-time translation lens that transcribes and translates audio. Partnerships are also in the works: Tripadvisor is building a lens to show “trusted insights” about nearby businesses, and Figma is developing an AR integration.

Context: Snap has previously released developer-focused AR glasses but plans a consumer-friendly version next year. CEO Evan Spiegel has promised the new frames will be significantly lighter than earlier, bulkier models. While the features are ambitious, it remains uncertain how large a revenue stream in-lens commerce will become for Snap.

Quick facts

  • Confirmed features: translation lens, enhanced browser, Spotlight video experience.
