Netflix is adapting Catan into TV shows and films

Board game pieces on a map-like board

Netflix is partnering with game publisher Asmodee to develop multiple screen adaptations of the hit board game Catan. Projects include both animated and live-action formats, with several concepts already in development. The move broadens Netflix’s push beyond video game IP to well-known tabletop franchises.

What’s being planned

  • Multiple projects: Netflix says animated and live-action adaptations are on the table; formats could range from narrative series/films to competition-style concepts.
  • Producers attached: Darren Kyman (Asmodee), Pete Fenlon (Catan Studio), and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, sons of Catan creator Klaus Teuber.
  • Status: Early development; no release dates announced.

Why Catan?

Catan (originally Settlers of Catan) tasks players with gathering resources, building settlements and roads, and negotiating with rivals to dominate a remote island. Its blend of strategy, trading, and table-talk drama makes it a natural candidate for screen storytelling—whether scripted or competition-based.

Context: Netflix + Asmodee

  • Netflix previously partnered with Asmodee on Exploding Kittens (mobile game for Netflix Games and an animated series).
  • Catan joins a slate that includes a Monopoly adaptation and game-inspired series like Splinter Cell: Deathwatch and the upcoming Assassin’s Creed show.

What to watch next

  • Format details: Will Netflix lead with a scripted series/film, or test the waters with a competitive reality format first?
  • Creative team: Showrunners, writers, and directors attached to the first project.
  • World-building: How the adaptation visualizes Catan’s island, factions, and trading systems on screen.
