Meta opens up Hyperscape Capture spaces — invite friends for virtual hangouts

Meta adds invites to Hyperscape Capture spaces on Horizon — host virtual hangouts with friends

People in virtual reality

Meta is rolling out an invite feature for Hyperscape Capture spaces on Horizon that lets people invite friends to hang out in scanned real‑world environments or celebrity rooms. Up to eight guests (age 18+) can join an instance via Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets, or through the Meta Horizon mobile app on Android and iOS. The invite option is being gradually added to accounts and Meta says it hopes to raise the party cap in future updates.

Hyperscape Capture, showcased at Meta Connect earlier this year, enables users to scan physical spaces with a Quest headset and convert them into digital replicas for social experiences. That means you can recreate your living room for a virtual meetup, or visit stylized celebrity spaces like Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen or Chance the Rapper’s living room when you can’t be together in person.

How it works

  • Invite sharing: Creators can generate a link to a Hyperscape space and send it to friends; recipients must be 18+ and have the link to join.
  • Platforms: Join via Meta Quest 3/3S or the Meta Horizon mobile app on Android and iOS — mobile lets non‑headset users participate.
  • Scanned spaces: Use Hyperscape Capture to scan a real environment with a Quest headset and produce a virtual hangout that preserves the layout and objects.
  • Celebrity rooms: Meta is also offering curated or celebrity‑owned spaces for exploration and social visits.

Why this matters

The update nudges Horizon from solo exploration toward small, private social experiences that blend real and virtual environments. Allowing guests from mobile devices broadens accessibility and may help Meta strengthen social use cases for Quest hardware. Gradual rollout and age limits indicate Meta’s cautious approach to safety and moderation as it expands social features.

As with any metaverse feature, privacy and moderation will be key concerns — creators should be mindful about what they scan and share, and guests should expect invitation controls and platform rules to evolve as the feature matures.

Discussion: Would you host a virtual hangout with scanned spaces — or prefer visiting curated celebrity rooms? What would you scan to share with friends?
