DEVONthink 4 lands on iPhone and iPad — DEVONthink To Go updated
After DEVONthink’s major desktop relaunch earlier this year, the company has released DEVONthink To Go 4 for iPhone and iPad. The mobile update brings core document-management functionality from the Mac to iOS, letting users access, organize and work with their files directly on mobile devices.
The update focuses on practicality and parity: features that previously required the desktop app are now available on iPhone and iPad, making it easier to keep a consistent workflow across devices. That means less switching between machine and mobile and more options to capture, annotate and retrieve information on the go.
What’s new on mobile (high level)
- Fuller document management: browse, tag, organize and search collections from your phone or tablet.
- Document handling & annotation: import, preview and annotate PDFs and other documents directly in the app.
- Sync & access: synchronize databases across devices so work started on desktop can continue on mobile.
- Improved mobile UI: workflows and navigation tuned for touch, with faster access to frequently used tools.
Why this matters
DEVONthink has long been a favorite for power users who need sophisticated organization, search and archival tools. Bringing those capabilities to iOS closes a gap for people who move between desktops and mobile devices throughout the day — researchers, students, lawyers and anyone who manages large document collections.
Considerations before switching fully to mobile
- Database size & storage: Large DEVONthink databases may still be easier to manage on desktop; check device storage and sync options before migrating.
- Feature parity: While many central features are now on mobile, power users should compare specific workflows (smart rules, complex searches) to ensure parity with the desktop app.
- Security & sync setup: Review sync settings and encryption options to ensure your documents remain secure across devices.

Discussion: Do you prefer managing large document collections on desktop or mobile? Would DEVONthink To Go 4 make you move more of your workflow onto an iPhone or iPad?
