Alexa+ Greetings can now answer your Ring doorbell and talk to visitors
Amazon has added a new Alexa+ feature called Greetings that lets Alexa respond to people at compatible Ring video doorbells and carry on a short conversation. The system claims to identify a visitor’s context (what they’re wearing, holding or doing) and then act — for example, asking delivery drivers to leave a package at the back door or telling solicitors to go away.
The feature is live in the US and Canada today but comes with several limitations: it only supports certain newer Ring models, requires a Ring Premium subscription and access to the Alexa+ early access build, and currently works only in English.
How it works
- AI analyzes visual context from the Ring camera plus any information the visitor shares.
- Alexa+ responds conversationally on your behalf and can follow scripted instructions (leave package, provide directions to a drop spot, etc.).
- All interactions are reviewable later in the Ring app so homeowners can check what happened.
Use cases Amazon highlights
- Directing delivery drivers where to leave packages without needing to answer the door.
- Collecting quick messages from friends or neighbors who stop by when you’re out.
- Politely declining door‑to‑door salespeople or communicating brief instructions to visitors.
- Managing holiday situations (for example, handing out treats without direct contact).
Risks and limitations
Amazon’s system relies on AI visual cues and will make mistakes — clothing, objects or actions aren’t always reliable indicators of intent. The feature’s reliance on visual analysis raises privacy and safety questions: who can access recordings, how long data is stored, and how accurate identity or role detection truly is in real‑world conditions. Because it’s limited to certain Ring models and requires a paid plan and early access enrollment, adoption will be gradual.
Should you enable it?
If you’re often away from home and want fewer trips to the door, Greetings could be useful — especially for frequent deliveries. But weigh the convenience against privacy tradeoffs and possible mistakes (for example, misidentifying a courier). Always review permissions, storage policies and the Ring app’s recording history if you enable the feature.

Discussion: Would you let an AI‑powered assistant answer your door — for convenience or safety — or do privacy and error risks keep you from enabling it?
